Life Story for Willard J. Gallagher

Born in Buffalo in 1928, Mr Gallagher joined the US Marines Corps in 1945 and trained with the Marine Division preparing to invade mainland Japan. The dropping of the Atom Bombs ended the war and with the Japanese surrender the Marine Group was diverted to Mainland North China to protect and ensure the withdrawal of Japanese Occupation Troops from that region. The raging civil war between the Communist and Chinese Kuomintang forces caused unwarranted deaths among the Japanese troops and civilians.

Mr Gallagher was Honorably discharged in 1947, resided in San Diego for several years then returned to Buffalo. He joined the US Army Corps of Engineers work force in 1959 and was assigned to the final stages of the St Lawrence Seaway, dredging project at Massena, New York.

Mr Gallagher then worked in many river and harbor projects for the Corps and finished his career assigned to the Black Rock Lock. He then retired from the Buffalo District in 1988.

In his final decline of health, Mr Gallagher appreciated and had the support of long-time friends Art Klein, Jerry and Terry Konys and Bob Laughlin all residents of Tonawanda, N.Y.
