Wanda A Wojcieszak, Delicatessen Owner

Wanda A. Wojcieszak, who helped operate a neighborhood delicatessen in Buffalo’s Black Rock neighborhood for many years, died Feb. 3 in Orchard Heights, Orchard Park, where she had been a resident for five years. She was 97.

Born in Buffalo, the former Wanda Szamatowicz was a graduate of Girls Vocational High School and worked as a secretary at Marine Midland Bank until the early 1950s.

Mrs. Wojcieszak assisted her parents in their store, Ma’s and Pa’s delicatessen on Germain Street, and continued to operate the business until 1988, when she retired and moved to East Aurora.

Located across the street from School 42, the store was popular with generations of students, with its extensive selection of penny candy, plus lunches and treats.

Mrs. Wojcieszak's husband of 53 years, Stanley J., was a factory foreman at Pratt & Letchworth and Dresser Industries. He died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. AnneMarie Block, a clinical laboratory director at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center; a son, Gregory; a close friend, Sally Corluccio; and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday February 10th in Assumption Catholic Church on Amherst Street.
