July 7, 2018, at age 69; loving companion of Jo Jo Capizzi; dear father of William, Ryan (Maria) Voelker and Krista (Matthew) Voelker-Burt; devoted grandfather of Khalil, Charlie and Thomas; dear brother of Linda (Isaac) Winograd and the late Gail and Mark Voelker; also survived by nieces and nephews. Visitation at the KOLANO FUNERAL HOME, 396 Amherst St. (near Grant), Friday 4-8 PM. A Funeral Service will take place at Assumption Church, 435 Amherst St., Saturday at 9:30 AM. Glenn D. Voelker passed away July 7, 2018, after a long battle with COPD. He was a long- time owner of Voelker’s Bowling Center and Kenmore Lanes.

Voelker’s Bowling Center (originally the Elmwood Hotel ) was started in the 1890’s by his grandfather, Karl Voelker. Karl was a German Immigrant, and he ran the small hotel and saloon on the corner of Elmwood Ave. and Amherst St., until his son Edward, and his wife, Frances, built the first set of 10 lanes in the 1950’s and continued to grow from there. In the late 1970’s Glenn and Mark Voelker, sons of Edward and Frances, took over operations until Mark’s death in 2006 and Glenn’s retirement in 2008, when Mark’s daughter, Krista Voelker-Burt, took over operations of the business. Retirement wasn’t for Glenn and he returned part time in 2009 until his death.

Glenn was a long standing fixture at Voelker’s Bowling Center and the Black Rock community. He was everyone’s “Uncle Glenn” always willing to help someone out or give a ride home. He was known to be able to fix anything mechanically. He enjoyed spending time with his family traveling and fishing. He was an avid dog lover. His love of history was well known and he always had a small fact for you to enjoy.
